Round 8: South Sydney versus Brisbane
We’ve won two on the trot and come up against an inconsistent Brisbane side. The Coach Potatoes will be out in force tonight with all excuses out the window for this one as they love a winner. They may even sign the Jason Clark petition.
After last week’s performance South Sydney deserve to be favourites but never underestimate a side coached by Wayne Bennett, they have too many classy players to not show up against us.
This week’s game has a bit more meaning to it as it occurs during ANZAC Round and we will be wearing a special jersey for it which commemorates all 340 graded South Sydney players that served in World War 1 and 2.
Our resident historian Big Foot has done a cracking tribute to Jack Rayner, former Souths captain-coach and World War 2 veteran, please check it out.

The Outsider’s Fearless Five
The dew factor
It will be hard to play expansive football this time of the year on a Thursday night at Stadium Australia. The game will be a lot slower than last Saturday’s and we will need to focus our attack within the tram tracks otherwise we may see a players end up in row four.
The conditions will favour Brisbane but we must adapt and most importantly hold onto the ball.
The Damien Cook love-fest
The Damien Cook love-fest continues this week. After a couple of wins this season he has been penciled in as a super sub for NSW Origin. Souths are rumored to be signing him up for life and the fans are loving everyone word written about him.
It will be interesting to see how sides start to target Cook. If Brisbane slow the play the balls down then Cook may be contained, it all depends on how the referees police the ruck.
It is Greg Inglis’ 250th NRL appearance and Thomas Burgess’ 100th NRL appearance this week which is a bit of motivation for the playing group. Thomas and George need to back up last week’s performance and really turn the screws this week with Sam not being there. They also need to keep cool heads as Brisbane’s forwards are prone to do a bit of niggling.
Dane Gagai has been a quiet achiever this season with the majority of tries being scored down the other side.
Dane is due for a man of the match performance and there’s no better time to do that then against some of his Queensland Origin team mates/
This could get ugly
Adam Doueihi is back on the bench this week after playing for Fake Souths last weekend. It will be interesting to see who fills the utility bench spot. Anthony Seibold chose Hymel Hunt last week but with Sam Burgess not playing this week does he go for someone like Kyle Turner? Only time will tell.
The Outsider’s prediction
It will be a scrappy contest due to conditions and both sides will be a bit flat but if Souths can grind it out then they’ll win by 4 points. Look out for James Roberts, he always has a big one against us.
Wherever you’re watching the game, I hope you have a good one. I’ll be back after the game to give you my verdict.
