The Outsider #18 – Round 7 review

Round 7: South Sydney 42 defeated Canberra 22

The Outsider

You can call this one ‘The slaughter on Brisbane Waters’. We were ruthless today and three tries in the first 15 minutes put Canberra out of the game.

Anthony Seibold is working wonders at the moment and after losing the opening two games of the season we have now won four of the past five.

Adam Doueihi played for Fake Souths this week and it was a smart move by Seibold. There’s no use having Adam warm the bench all game if you’re not gong to use him. He has had a taste of first grade and will now develop his game by playing second tier footy for the next couple of weeks.

The Outsider’s five key areas

Attack – 4.4/5

We were on fire and there’s a lot of points in our backline. The halves are slowly controlling the game and our left side is lethal especially when Alex Johnston chimes in.Damien Cook is playing out of his skin with the possibility of playing Origin. Our support play needs to improve as there were times when we could have gotten the ball away but there was no one home. The Coach Potatoes surely have to be fans of John Sutton now. He owns that left side and his vision is creating headaches for the opposition.

Defence – 3.5/5

At stages we were solid but struggled when Canberra threw the ball around. Our goal line defence is like a brick wall. If Sam is out then hopefully Cameron Murray returns next week but if needed Jason Clark will step in and keep that middle third defence tight.

We trusted the hunt today and kept Canberra on the back foot. A few repeat sets and a few sets with Canberra struggling to get out of their red zone gave us a lot of momentum.

The last 20 minutes we took the foot off the pedal and gave Canberra a sniff but we have to note that John Sutton and Sam Burgess were both rested.

Completions – 4.5/5

You’ve heard me say this before but if you hit the golden 80% you will win, if you hit 90% you’ll crush sides.

We were 34 from 40 = 85 % and we dominated Canberra today. A lot of this has to do with our fitness and bench rotations. The engine room are subbing at the right times throughout the game to ensure that fatigue doesn’t take over.

Kicking game – 3.5/5

Our kicking game was solid today and we used the breeze well with those towering bombs.

We are still not seeing the best of Adam Reynolds but the long term re-signing of Adam Doueihi will surely have him under pressure. Same with Cody Walker.

Discipline – 2.5/5

Some ugly penalties and some ordinary high shots today which have Sam and George Burgess both on report. I think Sam will spend a few weeks on the sideline with that shot but we will see what happens.

Where to from here?

We are dominating sides but we are not ruthless. It’s the wrong time of the year to become ruthless so things are looking up.

It’s a short turn around for us as we face Brisbane this Thursday but we will be going into this game full of confidence.

No need to shift Greg Inglis to fullback, it was great to see him score off an intercept today.

Not much except the possibility of having Sam and George out next week.

Until then….
